obama-rama ‘44’
HEINEMAN MYERS CONTEMPORARY ART, BETHESDA
So, you can’t get tickets to the presidential inauguration? Us too! But before you consider sending an angry missive to the legislative-aide friend you thought would be your hook-up, this event could quench your Obamamania thirst. “44” includes art and musical performances inspired by the president-elect. And if your hoping for some warm political fuzzies, the one-of-a-kind art collection features imaginative work that expresses hope for the future. 5-10 p.m. Saturday, 4728 Hampden Lane. $10 donation. heinemanmyers.com.
insider instruments ‘Brahms: Off the Cuff’
BALTIMORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Brahms’ “First Symphony” was often called “Beethoven’s Tenth,” an insult, we assume, that’s the classical musical equivalent of a “your momma” joke. But now, BSO Music Director Marin Alsop is giving the composer some respect. The second installment of Alsop’s new “Off the Cuff” series, which blends performance with interesting information about the composer’s life, working habits and previously hidden symphonic complexities. 7 p.m. Saturday. Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St. $25-$60. bsomusic.org.
foodie fervor ‘Meat & Sugar’
LOYOLA COLLEGE
Gather all of your gastronomically inclined buddies for this look at the universal human relationship with food. Installations from Stewart Watson feature candy, sugar and corn syrup cast into steel and iron. And paintings from Mike Geno, a former meat-cutter apprentice, depict meat as hallucinatory experiences. Maybe you should grab dinner before checking it out, or your stomach could grumble — a gallery faux pas, really. Opens Monday, runs through Feb. 13. Reception and artists’ talk: 5-7 p.m. Jan. 22. Julio Fine Arts Gallery, 4501 N. Charles St. loyola.edu.
sneak peek ‘The Soap Myth’
CREATIVE ALLIANCE AT THE PATTERSON
Baltimore native Jeff Cohen’s provocative work is about a young Baltimore journalist trying to find the truth behind a Nazi atrocity — making soap from the corpses of murdered Jews. This one-time performance is a staged reading, before it sets up shop Off Broadway this fall. 8 p.m. Saturday. 3134 Eastern Ave. $15. creativealliance.org.
