Tuesday, December 9th, 2008Obama Senate Doodle Bought For $2,075
Tuesday, December 9th, 2008For Northbrook’s Wayne Berzon, Obama’s win boosted both the historical and monetary value of a small piece of artwork. The Glenbrook High School District 225 Board member is an avid collector of baseball memorabilia and celebrity autographs. In his collection is a handmade and signed doodle Obama made on the floor of the U.S. Senate last year.
“I knew the guy had a great political career ahead of him, but who could know a year and a half ago that he would be President of the United States?” Berzon said.
How he got it
Berzon, an executive at a financial firm, bought the doodle during an online auction in May to benefit Neurofibramatosis Inc., a charity that researches the genetic disease that causes tumors to form on nerves.
Berzon recalled he figured he would buy it for about $700.
Some intense bidding drove the final price up to $2,075, and Berzon later learned he had been bidding against television actress Gillian Anderson of “The X Files,” whose family is deeply involved with the charity.
