Good luck getting around D.C. on Inauguration Day

January 8th, 2009

By NAFEESA SYEED, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – On a typical weekday, hundreds of thousands of people commute to the nation’s capital, snarling roads and packing subway trains and buses during peak hours.

Imagine multiplying that several times for Barack Obama’s inauguration Jan. 20.

“I don’t want in any way to discourage anyone,” said the District of Columbia’s city administrator, Dan Tangherlini. “I just don’t want them to come and be completely shocked by what they find.”

It won’t be pleasant, Tangherlini and other officials say.

Can’t get to D.C. for Inauguration Day? Consider these historic alternatives

January 8th, 2009
On The Road, by Bill McGee
Shortly after Election Day, I had a terrific idea: I would take my son out of school and travel to Washington to witness the historic inauguration of Barack Obama as the first African-American president of the United States. Alas, it stopped being a terrific idea around the same time that 4 million other Americans came up with the same one.

There are likely millions more who would like to be in D.C. on January 20th, but they’re prevented by a combination of factors—the expense of traveling, the mid-week date, the distance to the nation’s capital, the chance of bitter January weather and those crowds that are estimated to swell to record proportions. I considered airways, railways and highways, and soon realized that all modes were either too clogged, too expensive, or both.

That’s the bad news. The good news is there are myriad ways to witness history, and they all don’t require you to stand thirty-deep on Pennsylvania Avenue. Depending on where you’ll be two weeks from now, one of these choices might work for you.

Just Some Very Strange Portraits of Barack Obama

January 8th, 2009

Most people don’t make art unless they’re feeling inspired, and over the past year or so, Barack Obama has inspired lots of people — some of them so much that they felt compelled to make Barack Obama-themed art, some of which is very, very, — even bloggably — strange. Culled from the wonderful compendium that is ArtofObama.com, these images might inspire you too, or curse you with weird dreams for weeks, depending on your temperament.

To begin, consider the dove. A symbol of peace, and commonly associated with public figures living, dead and fictional who inspire positive feelings in their followers. Usually, however, the doves are flying around in the background and the inspirational public figure occupies some uncluttered foreground space. Artist Derek Chatwood, however, chose to depict Barack Obama as so inspiring and hope-y that he is literally stuffed with doves, who are flying out of his various orifices. Read More

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada sculpted a gargantuan portrait of Barack Obama on a beach in Spain out of gravel, sand and pebbles that is bigger than a football field, measuring 140 yards long by 80 yards wide. The ‘EXPECTATION‘ project is described by the Cuban-born, NYC based artist as a “large ephemeral sand painting” designed so it could be seen from Google Earth. The oversized work was meant to convey both the “global impact” of the U.S. election and the “symbolic power” it holds for people around the world. But despite the monumental work, the artist says he’s not in the tank for Obama, and described why he specifically chose this medium:

“EXPECTATION is made of sand, a material that embodies the ephemeral. It remains to be seen if the hopes so so many will disappear as quickly or will they find an enduring advocated in President Barack Obama.”

Well, if he’s not elected, John McCain could always order a military strike, since it is located in enemy territory.
